Basic Styles for Your House

One of the more standard type of house windows that you will see in a house is the one that slides up and down vertically to open. With the single hung only the bottom pane of glass slides upward to open, while with the double hung either pane of glass will slide to open all within a single frame. The other type of house windows commonly seen in most homes is the sliding windows. Just as their name alludes, they open by sliding the panes of glass in order to open them. They are available in single sliding or regular in which either one or both panes of glass are able to slide to open the windows.

However, there is also a third type of slider in which there are three panes of glass. They can be three equal sized panes of glass or they can have a larger center pane. But, regardless of the size of the windows, the outer two slide over the center stationary one in order to open.

Commonly seen in front rooms, pictures windows are a type of house windows that do not open. They are purely for esthetic purposes. They are often a large piece of glass that is fixed within a single frame. They are also usually partnered with other options beside to fulfill the functional need of ventilation.

A trilight is a type of house windows that is not seen as often. As the name highlights there are three panes of glass in a vertical formation. The top two sashes are fixed in place and do not open. The bottom sash slides upwards in order to open.

Another functional type often seen in a house is a casement. In order to open this type you turn a crank and it opens outward to either the left or the right. This is very convenient for spaces that are hard to reach as you just have to reach the crank rather than the entire frame in order to open it.

There are two more styles that open on a hinge like the casement. However, with the awning, rather than the hinge being located on the side, it is at the top and the sash opens outward from the bottom at an angle. The hopper is the exact opposite of that. With the hopper, the hinge is at the bottom and the sash swings open at the top. The hopper is commonly seen in basements.

Decorative Styles for Your House

There are several decorative styles of windows that can be used to bring additional appeal to the interior and exterior of your house. A very commonly seen option that is used in many front rooms is a bay. With this style, it actually extends out and away from the home in an arched fashion. The middle sash is the furthest out and is fixed in place. The side sashes can either be fixed or functional styles of double hung or casement.

The garden option is also three dimensional like the bay but is smaller and located higher up. There is shelving options included as this is a great place to put plants and other indoor vegetation. It usually has glazing on every side but the bottom.

There are also many different shapes that you can choose from as well. These are usually smaller in size but can add a special design feature to your space. You can use them in conjunction with other units but they work well as stand-alone units as well. Some of the shapes available are round, arch, quarter round, trapezoid, octagon, or triangle.
